Delivering
Information to Ethiopia and Beyond, Using Leading Edge Technology
- Noah A. Samara, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer,
WorldSpace Corporation
Abstract:
A new satellite-based infrastructure for delivering digital audio
and multimedia
content across the developing world has clear implications for
social and
economic development in Ethiopia. WorldSpace Corporation has created
a system that uses satellites to broadcast information directly
to small, inexpensive receivers. When connected to a personal
computer, these receivers function as wireless modems, enabling
the transmission of data, text and images without using the public-switched
telephone network, which is insufficient and even nonexistent
through much of rural Ethiopia. The applications of this infrastructure
include the provision of information to advance education, healthcare
and agricultural productivity in Ethiopia.
